► Faculty Representatives

Faculty Representatives

The core purpose of the Students’ Union is defined as “the advancement of education at the University of Cumbria” which means we exist primary to campaign on improving teaching, learning & assessment and to provide representation for students within the groups and meetings where decisions about academic issues are taken. The Faculty Representative positions are key in fulfilling that purpose, as they form the ‘front line’ of local elected Union officials and are the interface through which the majority of students will interact with the Union on a representational basis.

Even though there is one Faculty Representative for each Faculty that the University classes as being present at each Campus (which are defined as Carlisle, Lancaster and Penrith) they all have the same role description and general purpose – to filter the views and issues of students from their Faculty through to the Union and where possible act on those issues through the systems and resources at their disposal as elected officials. Under the leadership of the Academic Sabbatical they are expected to establish and maintain close working relationships with the local Student Academic Representatives (or Course Reps) form their faculty, and with these and other interested students hold regular issue-driven local meetings.

Faculty Representatives will also attend the University Boards and Meetings relevant to their Faculty, reporting back to the Academic Sabbatical and fellow Faculty Representatives to share information and to better coordinate the effective achievement of positive outcomes for our members. Support and ongoing training for this aspect of the role will be provided.

As local leaders and facilitators for student opinion and academic campaigning Faculty Representatives would benefit from a rounded mixture of sound organisational and good communication skills, and should be prepared for engaging in potentially detailed debates concerning educational policy. They will also be involved in planning and carrying out campaigning and lobbying, and as a team will be central in facilitating the establishment and ongoing work of a local Academic Forum consisting of Student Academic Representatives.

Under the current development plans of the University the following Faculty Representative roles are being offered at the respective campuses for the 2010/11 academic year:
