Student Life Sabbatical
Joining the Academic Sabbatical on the ‘Campaigning Axis’ of the Union, the Student Life Sabbatical leads all non-educational campaigning and oversees the Union’s activities in terms of health, wellbeing, welfare and student groups & teams. They liaise with the non-academic departments of the University, like LISS, IT services and the Sports Centres and take pride of place in campaigning to improve the range and quality extra-curricular activities and support services available to all students of the University. They balance an active interest in Students’ Union welfare campaigning and recreational activities with a desire to press the University for the best support services possible to sustain the educational aspirations of our students. More than just a ‘Welfare’ or ‘Sports & Activities’ Sabbatical, this role combines these elements with leading Union-wide campaigns for more opportunities and better services for our students, especially when they pay tuition fees to the University for those support systems.
With elected official responsibility for health, safety and student welfare, the Student Life Sabbatical will help the local organisers from Student societies and teams facilitate group meetings at the main sites, and in this capacity and in the interests of consulting with the membership will be expected to hold regular surgeries at the campuses. They also have shared responsibility with the Union Community Sabbatical in assisting staff and the Campus Representatives plan and run large events like Welcome Weeks and Graduation events.
In reflecting the needs of students through campaigning and helping groups organise locally this position has a significant leadership role and can tend to be more ‘public’ facing than the Academic Sabbatical. As such qualities such as being a people person who can listen, delegate tasks and communicate easily and widely would be a great asset. The post holder should be able to plan and work towards achieving outcomes, and have a genuine interest in the wellbeing and health of others.
