Each campus has it's own team of elected student officers which is known as a Campus Committee and is made up of the campus Vice President plus officers with specific roles, e.g. Entertainments Officer, Clubs & Societies Officer etc. They meet fortnightly to discuss campus specific student issues and organise campaigns, activities and other events. Each member of the Campus Committee automatically becomes a member of the Union Council, the policy drafting body of the Union. Council meets six times a year to decide the budgets of the Union and define the direction of the Union as a whole, amongst other things.
Who can stand for a Site Committee Position?
Anyone who is a current student at the University of Cumbria studying at the campus in question, no matter if they are full or part time nor what type of course they are on. Being a member of the Campus Committee does assume that you will have the time to attend the fortnightly meetings, work on your respective roles' tasks and attend other occasional events such as the six meetings of the Union Council.
Who does the Campus Committee work for?
Simply put the CampusCommittee work for you, the students of the University of Cumbria. The Students' Union is a representative organisation whose main purpose is to provide students with a voice that the University authorities cannot ignore. The Campus Committee works alongside the Sabbatical Officers (the elected Vice Presidents and President) to best concentrate the views, opinions and best interests of the students within the University. The elected officers are supported by the permenant Student Union staff in this role.
What are the Campus Committee positions?
After a recent Student Council Vote the organisation of the Site Committee was changed, and the new structure is as follows:
A full description of each Elected Officer Role is provided in the the sub-page linked off the main Elections Home Page: Election Positions>Campus Committee Roles.
Sabbatical positions are paid one year full time representative posts that take a lead role in the running of the Union across all sites. You may well have heard of the titles, President and Vice President. There is one cross-campus President, the Executive Officer of the Union, who is voted in by students across all sites. Each campus also has a Vice President, which is voted on by students only at the Site they represent. Sabbaticals work closely alongside the Union Staff and lead the Elected Officer team, and also sit on the Union Council and Union Executive.
Full details of the positions can be found here: President details and Vice President details.
Who can run for Sabbatical Positions?
Any student can run for a Sabbatical position, although it is a full-time paid post and if a candidate is elected who is not a final year student they will be expected to suspend thier studies for the extent of thier Sabbatical year. The University is fully supportive of such a 'gap year' option and it will in no way adversely affect your studies.
How much to Sabbatical Officers get paid?
Currently the President and Vice President positions are paid approx. £15,000 per year, with a pay award pending in August.
The Union Executive is the week-to-week managment body of the Union, and consists of the five Sabbatical Officers and the Student Executive Officers from each site. The Union Executive implements the policy & mandates delivered by Union Council and takes a certain level of decision making, although all policy and major expenditure has to be ratified by Union Council. Acting as senior Operational Management Team the Executive works closely with the Senior Staff of the Union to ensure that decisions made by Union Council are carried out in the day to day activities of the Union.
There are two types of Representative Positions, one that acts in support of the Campus Committees and another that represents the students of the smaller satellite campuses of the University of Cumbria at Student Council.
Faculty Representatives & Under 18's Rep
Faculty Reps are open for election at each major site, and can only be stood for by a student who is studying within the given Faculty.
There are five Faculties at the University of Cumbria and here is a list showing which campuses have elected representatives :
Faculty of The Arts (Carlisle and Lancaster)
Faculty of Business, Social Sciences and Sport (Ambleside, Carlisle and Lancaster)
Faculty of Education (Ambleside, Carlisle and Lancaster)
Faculty of Health (Carlisle and Lancaster)
Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (Ambleside and Carlisle)
Faculty Reps assist the Campus Academic Affairs Officer in convening and running the Academic Affairs Forum, and do not have either Campus Committee or Union Council voting rights, although like any student they can attend both. They are Campus Committee Support roles.
Under 18's Reps are new roles that exist in addition to the Faculty Rep roles at the Carlisle and Penrith sites. They are only open students under the age of 18's to stand, and would act in accordance with the details above for Faculty Reps but with the remit of assisting students under the age of 18 and representing these students and thier needs on the Students' Union Campus Committee.
The University of Cumbria has many other sites besides the main three, although the Union has a premanant presence at only the Ambleside, Carlisle, Lancaster and Penrith sites. To allow for the inclusion of the needs and views of students studying at other sites the Union makes the following Site Representative positions available to those students:
Barrow Site Representative
Whitehaven Site Representative
Tower Hamlets Site Representative
These Site Representatives sit on Union Council and have full voting rights.
