► Election Rules & Regulations

Welcome to the Union Election Reg's

Dear Student,

Thanks for considering standing in this year's union elections. Briefly, I just want to tell you why it's a great idea to stand.

The students at the University of Cumbria have formed a union. Each year we elect people to represent us and run the union on our behalf.

These people are known as union officers, and they fulfill a number of vital roles. And we want you to stand to be one.

Union officers are responsible for the work and direction of the Students' Union. As a team they identify what students want and look at ways in which these needs can be met.

The benefits to you are immense. You will get full support on the activities and tasks that you carry out. You may also attend conferences and meetings with other Students' Unions that are carrying out similar projects to you. Crucially, you will be able to demonstrate in the future that you have initiated and implemented a project, as well as showing that you are motivated and willing to take responsibility. Excellent for your own personal development and looks fantastic on your CV.

Voting Mechanisms

Most positions in the UCSU elections are decided by the Standard Transferable Voting (STV) system. This means that for each position the voter can numerically prioritise who they would like. For example:

There are three candidates standing; Tom, Dick and Harry. A voter can place them in order of who they would most like to win, giving Harry 1st priority, Tom 2nd and Dick 3rd.

When the votes are counted each position has a quote (total number of votes needed) which the winning candidate has to pass to win. If after counting all the 1st preferences (in our example Harry) no one candidate has reached the quote then the person with the lowest number of votes is ruled out and thier ballot paper redistributed according the 2nd preference.

It sounds complicated, but luckily all the tricky bits are done by the vote-counters! All you have to do is prioritise who you would like to win.

A page fully detailing how STV works, with an example based on 'Who is your favourite Simpsons Character' can be found here: STV Explained

Reopen Nominations - or RON - appears in each position. This is a option where the voter either wishes to endorse no more candidates (say after giving thier top choice a 1st priority vote) or if they wish to totally start the nominations process for this postion from scratch. If RON won a ballot then the election process for that particular role would begin again at the earliest opportunity, although all of the candidates who had been RON'd would be free to re-enter their candidacies.
