► Paris Lowcock LGBT Rep Candidate
I have been a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community at Lancaster for the time in which I have been at this university. Being a fresher this is only a year, however, I would like to stand for LGBT representative at this campus because I feel I am approachable and reliable and as a member of the community have experience to offer. I feel this role would be appropriate for me, because not only am I now openly bisexual but I have experienced the troubles that face a LGBT student.
If I was to be elected for this post I would firstly create a relaxed and open support network for LGBT students. This would be a set-up in which students would be able to approach me and discuss any issues that they are facing in confidence. I would like to further this support network through a number of ways. Firstly, I would aim to improve the LGBT facebook page. This is a key factor as becoming an open LGBT student is difficult. Therefore having a site such as facebook, which is something that is updated and checked regularly, could potentially aid those students in talking out their issues. To further this I would like to arrange regular meetings where issues can also be discussed.
A major subject in LGBT is the prejudice that we face. One method to diminish this prejudice is to break down the walls. This could be done through running awareness campaigns.
The difficulties that are faced by our LGBT students need to be bought to the attention of the Students Union as well as the minds of the students who face the issues. Therefore, I would also like to bring these problems forward to the Student Union for them to be discussed.
Finally, to raise awareness and social acceptance of LGBT students I would like to organise a table at the fresher fair to allow new students to feel accepted in their new surroundings, this would also promote the support network that is available.
To conclude, I believe that bringing people together will benefit, not only the students themselves, but the entire student body.
