► General Meeting

General Meeting

The General Meeting is what used to be called Union Council, and is the highest open student forum in the Union.. This make it the most important committee, as it is where the most wide ranging policy of the Union is discussed and decided, and has final oversight of any Assembly-specific policy passed at the specialist Assemblies. Attendance at General Meetings gives you a comprehensive view of all aspects of the Union.

All students are full voting members of the General Meeting. Elected officials are expected to attend all General Meetings, of which there will be a minimum of four a year, and any student can bring items for debate and discussion and generally contribute to the development and scope of the Students’ Union.

A General Meeting can (along with the Trustee Board) change the Constitution, and one of its main responsibilities is to hold the actions of the Trustee Board, Union Executive and Sabbatical Officers to account. As the primary representative body of the SU it is up to the General Meeting to make sure that the lead officers do their job, and that the wishes of the student membership are carried out.
