► Global Positions

Global Positions

Under the proposed structure there is a major re-appraisal of how the Union approaches the entire student community through the resources offered through global or cross-campus student representation. Under the current system only 2 out of 55 elected positions are elected through a whole-union vote. Given the fact that nearly two-thirds of students who study at the University of Cumbria do not see themselves as being ‘campus based’ and therefore are probably better served by global representatives this ratio is outdated. Furthermore, the research that underpins the proposals has identified this weakness in global representation as being a major factor in why students may view the Union as ‘not being something that is working for them’.

In light of all of this the Restructure makes radical recommendations that effect all levels of the Union and its democratic structure. As already discussed in the Sabbatical Officer section all Sabbaticals would be elected by and from global ballot, meaning that any student could stand and vote for all of these positions and that these roles would work for all students rather than just local constituencies.

Furthermore as detailed in the Union Committees pages decision making bodies would be expected to be held under circumstances that allowed any student to participate through such mechanisms as video conference locations, proxy voting and online debates informing policy drafting. These proposed changes as well as the recommendation that the current exclusivity of only elected officers being able to vote at decision making meetings be removed to allow any student who attends/sends a proxy all shift the focus firmly from the campus based to global theatre.

In addition to these changes to the mechanisms and meetings that support the students voice the proposals also detail a range of part-time globally elected roles that do not exist in the current strucuture. These are broken up into three broad categories; part-time Executive Representatives, Site Representatives and Independent Chairs.
