Student Trustees

The Students’ Union is considered a charity and as such its legal and financial well being is ultimately overseen in law by a Board of Trustees. The Board consists of a mixture of elected officials (the four Sabbaticals), external or lay trustees (who are non-student or staff individuals recruited from the wider community) and two student trustees who join the Board to provide the perspective of ordinary non-involved members on this powerful group which can make far-reaching decisions.

Trustee Board are ultimately responsible for the financial and legal performance of the Union, and being a trustee is both a fantastic opportunity and also a serious commitment. Trustees have to comply with certain legal requirements (they cannot have been declared bankrupt for example) but get to be involved in the very top management level of the Union, providing unparalleled experience and insight into how an organisation with half a million pound turn over operates. However, Trustees are ultimately responsible for the said management of the Union, and face the legal or financial repercussions of disaster, which is why they must scrutinise all decisions and developments rigorously.

Any student can stand for a Trustee position, and they can even hold this position at the same time as they hold another Union official post with the exception of Sabbatical (as they are already Trustees) or Independent Chair as this could create a conflict of interest. An interest in organisational management and an ability to digest detailed information are good talents for a student trustee, and attention to detail and a willingness to work as part of a team whilst retaining a sense of impartiality would be an excellent asset.

Training and ongoing support will be given for these posts, and it is usual for there to be no more than eight Trustee Board meetings over the course of any given year.

The full role description for Student Trustees as they are currently defined in the proposed policy documents is as follows:
