The Students’ Union is considered a charity and as such its legal and financial well being is ultimately overseen in law by a Board of Trustees. The Board consists of a mixture of elected officials (the four Sabbaticals), external or lay trustees (who are non-student or staff individuals recruited from the wider community) and two student trustees who join the Board to provide the perspective of ordinary non-involved members on this powerful group which can make far-reaching decisions.

Any student can stand for a Trustee position, and they can even hold this position at the same time as they hold another Union official post with the exception of Sabbatical (as they are already Trustees) or Independent Chair as this could create a conflict of interest. An interest in organisational management and an ability to digest detailed information are good talents for a student trustee, and attention to detail and a willingness to work as part of a team whilst retaining a sense of impartiality would be an excellent asset.
Training and ongoing support will be given for these posts, and it is usual for there to be no more than eight Trustee Board meetings over the course of any given year.
The full role description for Student Trustees as they are currently defined in the proposed policy documents is as follows:
11.1 Student Trustees
11.1.1 Two Student Trustees shall be elected as per Clause 3.4 of the Elections Policy. In law they shall be Trustees of the
11.1.2 Student Trustees may not hold the following positions within the
i) Any Officer Trustee role (i.e. Sabbatical official)
i) Independent Chair
11.1.3 The Student Trustees shall attend Trustee Board meetings as representatives of the wider membership.
11.1.4 They may be required to write reports or join in working parties or standing committees from time to time.
11.1.5 The Student Trustees shall be governed by the appropriate Regulations of the Constitution and Clauses of Policy pertaining to the working of the Trustee Board.
11.1.6 Student Trustees may be required to attend training to assist them in the fulfilment of their role.
