As the University includes a significant Further Education provision and these students are a minority in terms of proportion of the whole membership and in usually terms of age, the Students’ Union recognises that they need specific representation and encourage this through the posts of Further Education Representative. This position exists at both the Carlisle and Penrith campuses, and although it is not required that the post holder be under the age of 18 they should be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check if so asked, and this would normally be required of anyone over the age of 18 in this role.
Further Education Representatives are elected to bring the specific needs and opinions of students registered locally on FE courses to the Unions’ attention, and through their activity at Academic Forum and other Union systems and meetings strive to shape the activities and services offered to meet the specific needs of these students. The full role description for Further Education Representatives as they are currently defined in the proposed policy documents is as follows:
9.1 Further Education Representatives
9.1.1 Further Education Representatives shall be elected to specific sites where there are students registered to Further Education courses as specified in clause 3.4 of the Elections Policy.
9.1.2 Faculty Representatives shall:
1. Assist the Academic Sabbatical in convening local Academic Group meetings where Further Education Student Academic Reps and other FE students may attend to discuss issues and opportunities arising from learning, assessment and teaching.
2. In conjunction with any other officials from other campuses holding the same Further Education Representative position attend the relevant University Committees on behalf of the membership, these would include:
i) Further Education Learning Teaching and Assessment Committee
ii) Further Education Student Appropriate Faculty Academic Standards Committee
3. Report on issues arising and pursue outcomes from University Committees to the Academic Sabbatical, membership and any other relevant parties.
4. In association with the relevant parties locally organise and lead the Student Academic Reps from Further Education courses in liaising with the Students’ Union.
5. Represent the views, opinions and issues of Further Education students from the campus to the Executive Committee and Trustee Board and any Assembly or other Union meeting where appropriate.
6. Bring issues and problems arising from the membership to the attention of the relevant Group, Assembly or individual to seek positive outcomes.
7. Be a visible and approachable ambassador for the Students’ Union on the campus.
8. Assist relevant parties in increasing the involvement of Further Education students in Union affairs.
9. Assist the Campus Representative in specifically representing the Further Education students of the local campus.
