Ethnic Minority Representative

Unpaid Part Time Executive Representative Positions

The Executive is a sub-committee of the Trustee Board, and its main core business is broadly overseeing the day to day activities, management and business of the Students’ Union. Some of the output is routed back through the elected official structures and some is tasked as priority actions for the Union Staff team and is delegated to the Staff Management Team through the General Manager. The Executive sits under the authority of the Trustee Board.

The Union Executive consists of the full time Executive officials (who are the four Sabbatical Officers and the three Campus Representatives) and a broader base of part-time Executive roles who sit to represent the specific needs and opinions of particular constituencies.

Each part-time Executive Representative is expected to self-identify as belonging to the constituency which they are elected to represent, with the exception of Environmental and Ethical Representative.

As well as being members of the Executive all of the part-time representatives are expected to champion the rights and opinions of their constituency in all aspects of the Union, and where appropriate work with other officials and groups and bring items to the attention of the relevant Forum or Assembly.

Ethnic Minority Students Representative

The Ethnic Minority Students’ Representative reflects the view that despite legislation it is arguable that there remains bias within society based on cultural and ethnic backgrounds. As such students from ethnic minority backgrounds require specific representation in an effort to ensure that their needs and views are included. The Ethnic Minority Students’ Representative therefore ensures that the specific opinions and views of such students are represented at Executive level and within the Union generally.

The work of the Ethnic Minority Students’ Representative also includes striving to ensure that any barriers to participation specific to students from ethnic minority backgrounds are removed and that the work of the Union is conducted in a manner that encourages social trends that aid in equality. They should also assist the relevant officials and groups in running culturally diverse campaigns and direct policy to move the Union forward in this regard.

The full role description for the Ethnic Minority Students Representative as it is currently defined in the proposed policy documents is as follows:

The Ethnic Minority Representative shall:

1.       Represent the views of Ethnic Minority students to the Executive Committee and Trustee Board and any Assembly or other Union meeting where appropriate.

2.       Have specific responsibility for Ethnic Minority matters.

3.       Be responsible for increasing the involvement of Ethnic Minority students in Union affairs.

4.       Ensure that Ethnic Minority students’ views and concerns are reflected within the work of the Students’ Union.

5.       Assist the Union Community & Student Life Sabbaticals and Campus Representatives to ensure that the regular Inclusion Groups and Assembly are forums where Ethnic Minority students can bring issues.

6.       Where appropriate and necessary assist local activists to arrange meetings where only self-defining Ethnic Minority students can attend.

7.       Establish and maintain contact with, and provide information from groups and organisations, which work on Ethnic Minority issues.

8.       Organise social, educational events in conjunction with the relevant Union   official/staff/committee.

9.       Liaise with the Union Community Sabbatical and other relevant Union Officials, Ethnic Minority Society (or similar) and any other relevant organisation.

10.    Be an ex-officio member of any Ethnic Minority Society (or similar) Executive Committee.

11.    Provide advice, guidance and support to Union officials/staff/committees on equality, diversity and inclusion issues relating to Ethnic Minority students.
