► Union Community Sabbatical

Union Community Sabbatical Role Description

The Full Time Sabbatical officials are the representative leaders of the Students’ Union and are elected in a whole-Union ballot by and from all of the students who are registered to courses of study at the University of Cumbria. These roles are expected to travel around the various campuses and sites of the University, and may be based at any of the Students’ Union offices in Carlisle, Penrith or Lancaster.

The post of Representation Sabbatical takes over the senior position of President. All Sabbaticals are Trustees of the Union and have permanent positions on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.

Each post is paid approximately £15,000 for their single year of office and will be required to sign a contract of employment with the Union.

Union Community Sabbatical

The Union Community Sabbatical role forms the other half of the ‘Representational Axis’ of the Students’ Union Sabbatical team and in combination with the Representation Sabbatical covers all aspects of non-academic student representation. The Union Community Sabbatical has particular responsibility for ensuring that all students have a fair and equal access to the Unions’ services and resources no matter which campus or sites at which they study. This role supports the work of campus based representatives and has particular responsibility for inclusion, equality and bars/entertainments issues as well as traditional community based issues such as local partnerships with town councils and the police.

With the remit of ensuring that all sites feel equals in the wider Union Community this role effectively manages the paid aspect of the work of the part time paid Campus Representatives, and will be expected to spend a large part of their working time travelling between the campuses and sites. They are also responsible for developing communication routes with non-campus based students and striving for new ways to find connections with all our members. They are the internal communicator for the Students’ Union, directing our messages through to our student members and reflecting their responses back into the planning and action cycles of the Union.

This position will often be a highly visible key point of contact for students and present more of an ambassadorial role for our members, as such good inter-personal and communication skills, willingness to travel around the sites and the ability to get the most out of people are excellent qualities to bring to the role.
