► Representation Sabbatical

Representation Sabbatical Role Description

The Full Time Sabbatical officials are the representative leaders of the Students’ Union and are elected in a whole-Union ballot by and from all of the students who are registered to courses of study at the University of Cumbria. These roles are expected to travel around the various campuses and sites of the University, and may be based at any of the Students’ Union offices in Carlisle, Penrith or Lancaster.

The post of Representation Sabbatical takes over the senior position of President. All Sabbaticals are Trustees of the Union and have permanent positions on the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee.

Each post is paid approximately £15,000 for their single year of office and will be required to sign a contract of employment with the Union.

Representation Sabbatical

The Representation Sabbatical is the Senior Officer Trustee, or President, of the Union and acts as the leader of the Sabbatical Team and chair of the Board of Trustees. They fulfil many of the ‘inward facing’ aspects of the traditional President role, including being the main point of contact for the University management and external organisations such as the press and National Union of Students. They oversee the work of the Students’ Union staff through their working relationship with the General Manager, and work behind the scenes to ensure that the representative aims of the Union are upheld through democratic systems. The Representation Sabbatical forms half of the ‘Representation Axis’ of the Students’ Union Sabbatical team, and is complemented by the Union Community Sabbatical.

They can lead campaigns but are more focused on making sure that the rights of students are upheld by the University and also ensuring that the views and opinions of our members are adhered to within the rest of the Students’ Union systems. This role is perhaps less of a public figure for campaigning to rally around than in recent years, and is more focused on making sure the Union is working towards our stated representative objectives and that all students are receiving the level of service they deserve as well as being the outward face of the Union, sending the messages of our membership out to the University leadership and beyond.

As a leadership position the strength of the Representation Sabbatical is centred on the policies and representative systems that define the Union, and the role is suited to those with strong negotiation and mediation skills, plus a head for administrative systems and a firm grasp of the rights of students.

The full role description for the Representation Sabbatical as they are currently defined in the proposed policy documents are as follows:
