► New Structure Roles
Roles under the Yellow or ‘New’ System
|
The proposed new system of Union roles is intended to offer more options to all students by increasing the number of whole-union or cross-campus positions. These are roles that any student can stand for irrespective of where they are based, and which are elected in a whole-union ballot in which all students can vote.
Numbers of campus specific elected roles are also streamlined to focus on the academic representation work of the Union, which means that we have concentrated the work of these elected volunteers on representing your views and interests in the areas of education, demanding increases in quality and value for money from the University. As well as these local Faculty-based elected officials there are also Non-Portfolio or ‘open issue’ positions, where you can define the nature of the issue you wish to stand on and if successful campaign on. To reflect the specific needs of Further Education students there will also be a FE Students Representative at the Carlisle and Penrith campuses.
Other non-elected volunteer roles (peer-selected) will be available locally come the beginning of the next academic year to help student groups organise and to provide accountable liaison with the Union.

Perhaps most notable of all is the proposed change to the full-time paid roles that ‘lead’ the Union, those of the Sabbatical Officers. To reflect the fact that the majority of students do not consider themselves to be members of the Carlisle, Lancaster or Penrith Campus communities it is more representative of the money we spend on Sabbatical salaries to make these positions whole-Union or cross-campus. As such they are proposed to change to Representation Sabbatical (the new ‘President’), Academic Sabbatical, Union Community Sabbatical and Student Life Sabbatical.
To provide local representation a fifth Sabbatical salary will be split between paid part-time officers called Campus Representatives with one being based at each of the Carlisle, Lancaster and Penrith Campuses. These local Union officials will be paid to work set office hours offering on-site student representation and fulfil some of the responsibilities, and offer continuing students a part-time job opportunity.
Finally there will be elected representatives for the ‘Gateway Sites’ of the University like Barrow and Tower Hamlets, plus improved accountability and oversight from a new Office of Independent Chairs which has three vacancies for students to sit and watch over the conduct and work of the rest of the elected officers.
