Student Support Funds (University Managed)
There are a number of University based funds that students may be entitled to apply for. The following is a basic guide to what funds the University have available - for further detailed information the Students' Union advises students to make an appointment with a University Money Doctor/Student Development Officer in LISS at their Campus.
Funds for Further Education Students Only
Residential Support Fund (RSF)
Students on FE courses who whose daily travel to University would be impossible due to the distance from their home may be entitled to the RSF. The fund aims to contribute towards residential accommodation and towards travel costs from term-time accommodation to parental/family home. If students wish to check if they are eligible to apply they can look at the Residential Support Fund Guidance Notes on the University website.
Students can apply as soon as you have a confirmed place on a course
Learner Support Fund (LSF)
Aimed to assist students aged 16 and over with the costs associated with their Further Education course. Check if you are eligible to apply by reading the Learner Support Fund Guidance Notes on the University website.
Higher Education Students Only
Access To Learning Fund (ALF)
For students who are experiencing severe financial difficulty or who have unexpected financial emergencies. For more information see the ALF pages on this website.
SCAST Trust (Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust)
Bursaries and scholarships available for postgraduate study. One PhD research scholarship of £15,000 per year for up to 3 years. 50 postgraduate bursaries of £2,500 for those studying a postgraduate course or a second degree.
Eligible students - those who were a former pupil at one of the 50 schools contributing to the Trust Fund. Students should have attended the school after 15 September 2001 (for Sedburgh School, after 15 September 2002) and be between the age of 18 and 30 at the time of their application. Also, 6 years must have elapsed between the payment of an award and the date at which they first entered the school.

NurseAid for Diploma Nursing and Degree Nursing students only
NurseAid is a registered charity offering financial assistance to student nurses. If students are facing a financial crisis, eg a relationship breakdown/family illness/loss of household income, then they may be eligible for a grant of up to £400 from the charity.
How to apply:

Applications are accepted throughout the year and must be supported by a letter from a tutor/an adviser in LISS, plus appropriate documentary evidence.
Francis C Scott Charitable Trust (for Youth and Community students only)
A fund which provides financial assistance to students who are studying a Youth and Community course and were born in Cumbria or North Lancashire or have been resident in the area for at least 12 months. Awards provide funding towards either fees, travel or IT equipment/resources.
Prospective students may apply for an award towards fees/travel for a taster course. Check eligibility by reading the Guidance Notes on the University website.
How to apply: complete an application form and return to LISS at your campus - applications are considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Other Trust Funds
Eleanor Peel Trust - total available £2,000. Available for projects or activities which will be of benefit to the cultural and social awareness of the student concerned and outside normal academic or professional courses. Past activities have included rural educational development in South Africa, nursing amongst Palestinian refugees in Gaza and working in orphanages in Romania and South America.
Graham Brown Memorial Trust - £50. Set up in memory of a member of staff in the History Department who died in 1981. Single grant available to a student who wishes to pursue a project of activity in the area of History, Music or Field Studies.
Music Scholarships – a small number of awards are made to students studying music QTS or Performing Arts courses. Please see your Student Handbook for further information. Other prizes and awards may be available through your Faculty.
Trust Fund Awards and Prizes from the University of Cumbria
Further and Higher Education Students:
Swales/Jean Drummond Trust
A fund which is available to Forestry and Agriculture students at the Penrith campus only who can demonstrate financial difficulty. The fund can also assist towards educational travel/field trips. Check eligibility by reading the Guidance Notes on the University website.
How to apply:
Complete the relevant application form and return to LISS at your campus
Applications are considered at three meetings throughout the year. Submit your application form before one of these deadlines:
- 1 November 2009
- 1 February 2010
- 1 May 2010
Barham Benevolent Foundation
This is a fund which provides financial assistance to students at the Penrith campus only who are studying a dairy related course or who have strong dairy farming connections. The fund will contribute towards travel costs and living expenses for students who are experiencing financial difficulty. Check eligibility to apply by reading the Guidance Notes on the University website.
How to apply: complete an application form and return to LISS at your campus. Applications are considered on a monthly basis.
Carolyn Horne Memorial Fund
A very small fund available to Further Education and Higher Education students who are not eligible for student loans or help from other financial funds, eg Access to Learning Fund, EMA, Learner Support Fund etc. The fund is available to home students, EU and overseas students. It is intended to support essential living costs only. Due to the size of the fund, awards are capped at a maximum of £350 per academic year.
Eligibility Criteria - If you meet these criteria you can apply:
· you are not eligible to apply to any other financial fund, eg Access to Learning Fund, EMA, Learner Support Fund etc
· you can demonstrate that you are in financial difficulty or will be in the near future
· you have used all other financial options available to you
· all awards are dependant upon satisfactory attendance and continuing registration.
