What are you aims and objectives of the club/society?
• To promote hockey as a sport.
• To win games.
• To win the league.
• To allow any student to participate in hockey activities expert or beginner.
• To create a friendly, sociable atmosphere.
Please provide some general information about what you do and what you can offer to other students:
The hockey team provides training for anyone who wishes to practice, develop and improve their hockey skills and fitness. The team compete in the competitive BUCS leagues and cups whilst arranging friendly games between local teams. The team can also claim one of the best sponsors at the University, Elements being the largest night club in Lancaster. This gives us the benefit of being able to provide excellent equipment to be used in training and matches. For example this year we purchased away tops for each player to keep, complete with numbers and names. Whilst the Hockey team takes their sport seriously we also feel we have an excellent social side with all hockey players. We have regular hockey nights out where we take advantage of our VIP treatment at our sponsors Elements.
Any student can join beginner or expert. We accept everyone into the team and welcome everyone to train with us and join in the banter.
Do you have any great success stories?
In the year 2007 the hockey team suffered a loss of some amazingly talented hockey players due to them completing university. This left the team with as little as 5 players. During freshers the team made a major push to attract players to the squad, beginners and experts alike. Over the next two years this continued and now the hockey team can boast a squad of over 20 players.
Not only this but during the past two seasons, the hockey team travelled to Europe on tour. The first year we travelled to Salou in Spain. There we competed against teams from all over the UK in a league and knockout tournament. The team played very well only to be defeated in the final on penalties. The following year the team travelled to Lloret de Mar in Spain to enter the tournament once again. The hockey team managed to reach the semi-final of the tournament only to be beaten 1-0 by conceding a very late goal. The team plans to return to Europe next year to take on the universities once again. 3rd time lucky!!
What are you hoping to achieve through your club/society?
The Men’s Hockey Team hopes to achieve promotion this season. We have already progressed into the next round of the cup and hope to advance further in that as well. We also hope to promote hockey in the university and local area. We aim to develop our team skills though training and matches to attract more players to the squad. Any players wishing to compete at a higher level are encouraged to join the local hockey team, Morcambe Hockey Club, who we have great links with.
