Campaigns

The Students' Union Advice Service supports a number of students' Union welfare and academic campaigns.

Currently the Students' Union is involved in the following campaigns:

Mark My Words Not My Name

Mark My Words Not my Name is the University of Cumbria Students' Union's campaign for anonymous marking.

Nationally, Students' Unions and NUS have been calling for anonymous marking since 1999. Anonymous marking of students' assignments is increasingly a requirement of assessment procedures in many UK universities and colleges, including: Staffordshire, The University of Manchester, York St John University, Liverpool John Moore’s and Strathclyde and more.

In the 2007 National Student Survey 40 per cent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with feedback and assessment. We believe that anonymous marking would increase student satisfaction and confidence in the fairness of their marks and feedback.

It is important to stress that by adopting anonymous marking the University would not be implying that it believes that such prejudices exist or that they influence the marking of written assessments. Rather, it would be reassuring students, and staff that factors extraneous to the quality of the work submitted, cannot influence the assessment process, and would guarantee equity of treatment for all students. Adopting anonymous marking would also further protect academic staff against accusations of bias from students who are dissatisfied with a mark that they have been given.

The Students’ Union understands that it is not possible for all forms of assessment to be conducted anonymously. It is understood that presentations, practical assessments, and most placement activities involve activity where the identity of the student is clearly known. Given the specialised nature of dissertations at any level, it is almost impossible to achieve anonymity in their examination.

UCSU CommUNIty Campaign

The Community campaign will take place at all University of Cumbria Sites and
Campuses and has three key aims:

To enhance a healthy sense of Community
The campaign aims to enhance a healthy sense of Community amongst student residents, local residents and local businesses. The Students’ Union plans to run a leaflet/postcard campaign in student resident areas to encourage students and residents to introduce themselves to each other.

To enhance student awareness of Recycling/Environmental issues
Sabbatical Officers and staff will work in conjunction with Environmental Officers to develop a plan that can introduce students to the environmental issues that may arise on Campus or as they move out of Halls of Residence and into the local Community. This may involve raising student awareness about recycling and helping to avoid the possible disturbance created by rubbish (especially when students are moving in and out of houses at the end of term) or helping new students in halls to understand how the University recycle and deal with refuse.

To develop student awareness about noise disturbance
The Students’ Union has previously ran a SSHH (silent students happy homes) campaign that aimed to reduce the amount of noise disturbance caused by students on their way out or on their way home. As part of the Community Campaign a new look SSHH style campaign will aim to encourage students to be more considerate neighbours and will be incorporated into the existing ‘Touch’ Campaign.

As part of the Community Campaign, the Students’ Union will also explore the idea of a Community Rep Scheme. Similar schemes have had mixed success at other universities and unions and may or may not be of benefit got our students and local communities. There may also be further opportunity to explore relevant community volunteering opportunities.

Touch Campaign

The touch project is managed by the Students’ Union Advice Service and UCSU Volunteering and recruits and trains student volunteers to provide an outreach service at Students’ Union social events across all Campuses to promote information about sexual health, relationships, drugs, alcohol, personal safety and security. The project provides on-going support and campaigning on health topics throughout the academic year.

The ‘touch’ project aims to recruit, train and support University of Cumbria students to become volunteer workers:
  • To produce and disseminate information on key health issues, such as relationships, sexual health, alcohol, safety and drugs.
  • To work with students at evening events, answering questions, refer on, offering information [not providing counselling or advice].

What do the volunteers do?
Volunteers operate on an event by event basis, with a team of 4-6 being active on a ‘Touch’ night.
  • The Co-ordinators brief the volunteers and often a theme is chosen to be promoted for the night, e.g. emergency contraception, drink spiking.
  • They hand out a mix of condoms, ice-pops, sweets, stickers, interactive cards, ‘lucky dip’ bags, drop cards.
  • They talk to students and look out for people who need help or support.
