Question Times (or Hustings) are when all students are given the opportunity to hear the candidates make a speech and then put questions to them. The sessions are run according to rules set by the Returning Officer, and are chaired by either the Returning Officer or one of their representatives. A session is run at each main campus of Ambleside, Carlisle, Lancaster and Penrith, where the candidates standing for officer positions at that site are joined by any Cross-Campus candidates (such as President) who are required to attend all sessions across all sites.
They are often held in Student Union venues at times that are decided by the local Sabbatical as being best for the majority of students to attend. Given the diverse nature of the student body and the courses the University offers it is practically impossible to find a time that everyone can attend, but we try to maximise access for all.
Question Times follow a set pattern; each candidates gets to make a 2 minute speech in order of the position they are standing for, with Sabbatical and Cross Campus Officers going last.
Any questions must be submitted in advance of the Q&A session to the Chair, and they must asked to all candidates contesting a given position; i.e. a questions posed to a particular Entertainments Officer candidate will be asked to all candidates standing for Entz Officer.
Questions must be related to the elections, such as experience, pledges, ideas etc. Personal or inappropriate questions will not be allowed.
The Question Times will take place in the week beginning the 11th May at the following times and locations:
