The Students' Union is run by the general student membership through elected student officers, who are returned on an annual basis to serve at the direction of those who elected them. As well as the officer element of the Union there is a team of staff members who are there to support the smooth running of the organisation across all campuses. The Student Officers make up different committees who meet regularly to discuss and decide the direction of the Students Union. Under the current structure there are three levels of committee: the Union Executive, the Union Council and Campus Committee, although this structure is currently under review and it is UCSU's aim to change to a more open representative system in 2010
The Union Council is the student equivalent of the House of Commons. Council meet up 6 times per year and hold the Executive accountable for what they have been doing in the name of the Students' Union. Council have the power to change or amend the constitution, which is our big book of rules and regulations. Council is made up of soley elected students including the Sabbatical Officers and elected Officers from each Campus Committee. What is The Union Council?
What is The Union Executive?
The Union Executive is made up of the Cross campus President, the four Vice Presidents and the four part time Student Executive officers from the four campuses. They are responsible for making decisions about union finances and policies. The Executive meet up every two weeks to discuss the current agenda.
What is the Campus Committee?
There is a campus Committee on each of the four main campuses which is made up of the Vice President and elected officers, who represent students through different areas of the Students' Union. The officers on the Campus Committee are current students who volunteer their time to help run and offer support for issues in their specific area. For example of you wanted to start a club or society your Clubs and Societies Officer can help you. Campus Committee are elected for one year by the student body and their are a fixed number on each campus.
